New Access Control Technology at
Keating (BIO5) and MRB Buildings

There are individuals on campus who use their CatCard for door entry up to 30 times per day. These individuals are usually associated with departments that have a higher level of security required in and around the facility. Of course, this results in wear and tear and having to replace their cards several times a year.

The CatCard Office has introduced a new technology that will allow a user to wave their card within 3 to 5 inches from the reader, and if authorized, the door will open. This new technology consists of a "Contactless SmartChip" that is embedded in the card itself; you cannot see it just by looking at the card.

The Keating Building (BIO5 Institute) and Medical Research Building (MRB) will serve as a pilot test for this new technology. Individuals who will be working in these two facilities will be issued contactless smartchip cards.

This new technology will provide a higher level of security and keep individuals from routinely replacing their card due to swipe damage. For further information regarding this technology, please click on the appropriate links to the right.
